What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that helps you achieve a hairless body without shaving, waxing, or trimming. Rather than pulling the hair out by the root or cutting it off near your skin’s surface, laser hair removal stops your hair from growing in the first place.

Using laser hair removal, you can remove or significantly reduce hair on any or all of these parts of your body:

How does laser hair removal work?

At Keehan Dermatology, Dr. Keehan uses the GentleMax Pro® system, the gold standard for laser hair removal. GentleMax works on all hair colors, skin colors, and skin types.

GentleMax Pro uses a dual wavelength system. The two wavelengths of laser light penetrate your skin and target the hair follicles, or sacs that grow your body hair.

The pigment in the hairs and follicles absorbs the light and converts it to energy. This process damages the follicles and causes them to stop growing hair.

While many laser hair removal systems cause discomfort, GentleMax Pro works against potential discomfort with a patented cooling system. As the laser heats your skin, the cooling system fights the heat to keep you relatively comfortable.

How long does laser hair removal last?

For most patients, laser hair removal isn’t quite permanent. Instead of killing your follicles entirely, the GentleMax Pro laser merely puts them into a dormant state.

While dormant, they don’t grow hair for a very long time. You need multiple initial treatments in order to catch all of your follicles while they’re actively growing hair.

When your hair finally starts to grow back, it may be lighter in color and there might be less of it than before. As the hair grows back, you can return to Keehan Dermatology for touchup treatments to continue enjoying smooth, hair-free skin.
