Dysport and other neuromodulator injectables contain small amounts of a purified botulinum toxin protein (type A, or abobotulinumtoxinA) that’s been refined, diluted, and sterilized from the natural bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
When we inject Dysport into the muscles beneath your frown lines, worry lines, and crow’s feet, the cosmetic agent effectively blocks the nerve signals that tell these muscles to contract. This leads to short-term, localized muscle relaxation.
These facial muscles are connected to the overlying skin tissue, and as they relax, your skin does, too — smoothing out the dynamic wrinkles on your skin’s surface in the process.

The effects of neuromodulation are quick, but they’re not instantaneous. And while they do last up to four months, results are also temporary, as botulinum toxin gradually wears off over time.
This means you experience a period of time after treatment when your skin-smoothing results gradually “kick in,” and a few months after treatment, you also go through a period when your results gradually wear off, and your wrinkles start to reappear.
Let’s take a look at the issues that might lead to an “uneven” appearance:
You can expect to see smoother skin and fewer wrinkles within 24 hours of your Dysport session. During this time, it’s important not to rub or massage the treatment area, as doing so can interfere with the “settling” process.
We do encourage you, however, to gently exercise the treated muscles during this time by frowning, smiling, or raising your eyebrows. This can help the injectable settle evenly.
The full effects of Dysport can take up to three days to appear, while the neurotoxin agent settles and fully “kicks in.” With correct dosages and proper injection techniques, most people see even results that look great from the start.
It’s possible to see uneven results during the settling phase. Dysport can affect muscles at different rates, causing one side to temporarily appear more relaxed than the other; this issue usually resolves on its own as the injectable continues to settle.
Sometimes, one side becomes less relaxed because the facial muscles in that area are stronger. If this uneven appearance doesn’t resolve within three days of the settling process, additional Dysport injections may be needed to balance out the asymmetry.
Once Dysport is fully settled three days post-treatment, you can expect your results to last up to five months. Depending on how your body metabolizes the muscle-relaxing protein, its effects might last for two, three, or four months. Results tend to last longer after you’ve had multiple treatments (and tend to be shortest following the first session).
Most of the time, Dysport wears off in a relatively even way: You simply start to notice the gradual return of forehead lines and crow’s feet as your muscles slowly reactivate. This is usually a sign that it’s time to schedule your next Dysport maintenance session.
If your Dysport seems to be wearing off in an uneven way, chances are your facial symmetry will even itself out quickly as the neuromodulator continues to dissipate. You can allow the process to play out — or you can schedule a quick Dysport boost to smooth out your skin once again.
